Project spotlight: 8th grade wabash river raft trip
Each year the Sullivan Co. SWCD hosts an 8th grade rafting trip for the current 8th grade classes of Sullivan Middle School, Northeast Middle School, Carlisle Middle School, Rural Community Acadamy and the Master’s Class schools of Sullivan County the last week of September.
On the trip, students have the opportunity to learn about the history of the Wabash River, the wildlife and plants local to the area, water quality, invasive species, and much more. The first part of the day the 8th graders raft from Hutsonville, IL to Merom, IN. Once arriving at Merom, IN the students spend the rest of the day rotating through educational stations and enjoy lunch at historic Merom Bluff Park.
After the trip, students are encouraged to write one-page essays explaining what they learned while rafting the Wabash River in their English classes. The essays are then reviewed at the SWCD and two winners are chosen from each school and awarded a prize at the SWCD Annual Meeting in the Spring.
It is a great trip all-around for the students and the volunteers. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers for helping make the event possible and providing our community with a special educational opportunity.
